SERGIO MARTINEZ: "I WOULD LOVE THE CHALLENGE OF FIGHTING MAYWEATHER NEXT"

By Mike Juhas | May 12, 2010
SERGIO MARTINEZ:

"Now that Pavlik is not exercising his rematch clause, I'm open for whomever HBO desires. I would love the challenge of fighting Mayweather next, though...Floyd's the pound-for-pound king and he makes the rules. It would be an honor to fight the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. We'd fight him for the junior middleweight title or the middleweight title. It would be an honor to fight him at any weight he desires between 154 and 160 pounds, for either title, as long as it's at a minimum of 154 pounds," stated jr. middleweight and middleweight champion of the world Sergio Martinez as he talked about his future plans. Martinez is eager to face any of the big names in the sport, but he made it clear that he's hoping to face Floyd Mayweather next, at either 154 or 160 pounds, should a bout with Manny Pacquiao not come to fruition. Check it out.

MJ: How are you enjoying being the middleweight world champion?

SM: I'm enjoying every second of being in this position. It is truly an honor.

MJ: What did you think about the Williams-Cintron fight last weekend?

SM: It was inconclusive. The fight ended when it was just getting started.

MJ: Would you like to rematch Paul Williams next?

SM: He's certainly an option; it all depends on HBO and Lou DiBella.

MJ: What did you think of the Mayweather-Mosley fight a couple of weeks ago?

SM: Floyd was brilliant, like always. He's by far the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

MJ: Whom do you want to fight next?

SM: Now that Pavlik is not exercising his rematch clause, I'm open for whomever HBO desires. I would love the challenge of fighting Mayweather next, though.

MJ: You are the champ at 154 and 160. Which title would you like to defend against Mayweather?

SM: Floyd's the pound-for-pound king and he makes the rules. It would be an honor to fight the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. We'd fight him for the junior middleweight title or the middleweight title. It would be an honor to fight him at any weight he desires between 154 and 160 pounds, for either title, as long as it's at a minimum of 154 pounds.

MJ: What about Manny Pacquiao?

SM: Congratulations to him on his Congressional victory. I would take that fight in a heartbeat, but I don't believe the Congressman will take the fight. Top Rank knows how to get in touch with me if Manny is interested.

MJ: Are there any other fighters on your radar?

SM: We want the major players. I've been called out by Sergio Mora, but that's not an acceptable fight because he didn't honor his contract with me last time. I'll take anyone acceptable by HBO, but I expect to be included on the short list for a future Mayweather fight.

MJ: Do you plan on keeping all of your belts?

SM: I'm waiting for my advisor, Sampson Lewkowicz, and promoter, Lou DiBella, to make that decision. I can fight at either weight and I treasure all of my belts. It is an honor to be world champion.

MJ: Is there anything else you'd like to say to the fans?

SM: I want to give a big hug to all the fans. Wherever I go, I'm being recognized. I'm looking forward to bringing my best for them in my next fight.
